The Gardeners cottage is easy to find as you enter Portree by road from the south. Take the driveway signposted Viewfield House on your left not long after you enter the village. The entrance to the drive is directly off the A87; turn left at the sign just before the Portree Filling Station. The filling station is an easily spotted landmark, slow down when you see it and turn left fractionally before you reach it, at the sign for "Viewfield House" and "Skye Shrubs".
Driving times vary but for all practical purposes allow the following from:
- Edinburgh or Glasgow: 5½ hours
- Inverness: 3 hours
- Kyle of Lochalsh: 45 minutes
- Armadale: 1 hour
- Uig: 25 minutes
From Glasgow: take the A82 via Fort William to Invergarry and then the A87 to Portree. This route will take you over the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. There is an alternative route from Fort William, via the Mallaig ferry to Armadale on Skye, if you choose to travel this way, please look carefully at the ferry timetable and book your ticket in advance.
From Edinburgh: The quickest route is to take the A9 north to Dalwhinnie and then the A86 to Spean Bridge where you join the A82 just north of Fort William.
From Inverness: take the A82 to Invermoriston and the A887 which turns into the A87 leading to Portree.
If you are using a satellite navigation system please make sure you choose your preferred route before you programme your GPS. Some systems may take you to the ferry terminal at Mallaig, without offering you the option of crossing the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. If you select to break your journey in Fort William you can then decide which way you want to go and check whether the ferry is running.
The railheads serving Skye are at Mallaig and Kyle of Lochalsh. Neither railhead is served well by onward public transport. Please look carefully at the bus timetables or better still arrange for a hire car to be delivered to the train station or ferry terminal.
The nearest Airport is at Inverness. Scheduled flights operate between Inverness and London Gatwick, London Luton, Belfast City, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Stornoway in the Western Isles, Kirkwall in Orkney and Sumburgh in Shetland.. If you are coming from the South by air, this is the obvious place to rent a car.
There are three car ferries to Skye.
- Mallaig to Armadale
- Glenelg to Kylerhea (a rewarding detour, leaving the A87 at Shiel Bridge and re-joining it at Ashaig on Skye)
- Lochmaddy North Uist and Tarbert Harris to Uig
